(My new 20,gallon long.)
15, things you need to have to enjoy your land hermit crabs.
1. You need to have atleast a 10,gallon glass tank as a start. Absolutely NO plastic containers or wired cages!!! If you become as addicted as I am then later I would decide to update your tank to a 20,gallon long for example.
2.With that you also will need a lid to cover your tank. (It will keep the temperature aswell as humidity up and in.)
3.A Humidity gauge,should range from 74 to 82%
4.Temperature gauge,should atleast be 72'F to about 84'F.
5.Playsand, compressed coconut fiber as a substrate, you will need enough to cover the ground in your tank and so many inches deep for your biggest hermie to molt in or just to dig down. I would say atleast five inches deep or twice as deep for every crab in your crabitat.
6.Shells of different varietys,types,sizes,and colors.
7.Crushed cuttle bone for calcium. (Not really a must have but, if your hermits are not getting enough protein/calcium it's a good idea.)
8.Atleast one food dish. (Some people like to offer the hermits different types of food at one time,so they have a choice.)
9.Two water dishes. One for fresh water and another for salt.
12.Climbing logs such as choya wood are great for your hermies to climb in their spare time, plus it adds a natural look to your crabitat.
13.Instant ocean or red sea salt. (For the saltwater dish or pond.)
14.Fake plants, coco huts, flower pots, climbing toys, and other hideys. Be creative while decorating your crabitat. You could do certain themes. Alot of people like to go with the 'natural' look.
15.Finally, your hermie needs atleast one friend!!! When you decide to go buy crabs I recommend you get atleast two!!! If not more, hehe.
Trust me they are addicting!!! :)
